The Duluth Bethel is thanking frontline workers in the pandemic by displaying blue lights outside its Mesaba Avenue building.

“So many have continued to serve. That includes our staff members, who have been on the job throughout COVID-19,” Bethel Executive Director Dennis Cummings said. “We’re proud to show our support with strings of blue lights outside our building. And because we are right on Mesaba near I-35, many people driving past see that message of thanks.”

Project Blue Light is an initiative of public health departments throughout northeast Minnesota to express thanks to frontline workers who have kept communities safe and operating in the pandemic.

“In addition to police, fire, EMT and health-care workers, we can’t forget about grocery store employees, delivery and supply people, restaurant workers and others who have kept us going,” Cummings said. “At the Bethel, our counselors, administrative team and those who keep our building open, warm and serving food to clients are certainly on that list. Every time I see the blue lights around our building, I am proud of our community. I’m also proud of our team for being part of this continuing effort.”

In addition to placing blue lights on the front of businesses and homes, residents in the region are encouraged to display signs, posters and banners thanking frontline workers. Project Blue Light also asks participants to share photos of their support using #thankyouwithblue on social media.
